In this fall session, Clarion invited Cantonese opera singing teacher Ms. Lea from Jing Ying Cantonese Opera Institute to teach the students how to sing a short aria. Students learned to pose on stage, articulate each Cantonese word properly and sing in a high-pitch voice. Since many of the opera lyrics are sad and gloomy, lead teacher Clara Hsu wrote a new lyrics that is more child-friendly. The "chorus" of 25 students will perform on December 7 at the San Francisco Main Library, along with other opera students at Jing Ying. They will be accompanied by live musicians playing Chinese traditional instruments. It has been a valuable learning experience for everyone.
