About the Event
Nancy Wang of Eth-Noh-Tec will be reading several chapters from her soon to be published Red Altar, a novel that is based on their successful and highly lauded performance of the same story.
In 1850, six teens left China to start a new life in America, only to crash into the Carmel Bay. Fortuitously, as fishermen, there was no fishing industry in the very rich waters of the Monterey Bay area of California. They started the fishing industry despite discrimination and legal racism. The story follows three generations and how they had to continuously re-invent themselves as each new law tried to rid the area of the Chinese. They succeeded with courage, perseverance and ingenuity.
The novel is rich with detail, as well as a deeper development of the characters than a performance can allow. A chapter reading of Red Altar has already won an award from the Monterey Historical Association.
In addition, dialogue and discussion will follow, particularly in light of this era of anti-Chinese violence. Also included will be tips on how to begin the process of researching and writing your family story.
