About the Event
Filmmaker Doniphan Blaid said, "I grew up before the Holocaust was taught in school and my mother didn't talk about it much until I was almost 30. That was in the '80s, when the world finally opened up en masse to films and books on the subject. My family entered almost a decade-long discussion and attended many gatherings and events, while I studied it at the Holocaust Center of Northern California and YIVO institute in New York. By the time we shot the movie in 1997, there was a certain over-saturation on the subject, which is why we focused on the female side of war and introduced the performance pieces. We revisited that history a third time while editing and publishing my mother’s book, “Love at the End of the World: Stories of War, Romance and Redemption”. Now we are entering another phase plagued by Holocaust deniers and conspiracy theorists, which challenges us to keep developing new ways of dealing with that history."
