About the Event

Lewis Jordan introduces Music at Large, an ensemble that brings music, poetry and an open spirit of improvisation. Saxophones, violin, bass, and drums come with original compositions.

The group crafts its performances to highlight solo instrumental voices as well as collective interaction. With ears for a tradition that encourages innovation, this unique group has an interdisciplinary approach that works well with artists from a range of experiences.

Lewis Jordan: alto saxophone, poetry

Sandi Poindexter: violin, voice

Bruce Ackley: soprano saxophone

Ollen Erich Hunt: bass

Donald Robinson: drums [for Jimmy Biala on January 27th]

In 2022, the group released its fourth CD, Critical Mass (Innova 073). Critical Mass represents people coming together in celebration, a sense of victory, and achievement arising from realizing that there is strength in numbers. This is grounded in our being attentive to and attuned to what makes us whole: the rights we claim for ourselves and the rituals by which we resonate with our deepest beliefs.

Lewis Jordan and Music at Large, “Critical Mass” (Innova): Oakland alto and baritone saxophonist Lewis Jordan orchestrates a magisterial program integrating jazz and spoken word interludes, featuring his own recitation (and poet Genny Lim on the title track). Crackling with energy, his band Music at Large plunges into his large-scale vision with a stellar cast including saxophonist Bruce Ackley, bassist Ollen Erich Hunt, percussionist Jimmy Biala and violinist Sandi Poindexter, who also contributes vocals on two tracks.
