“Musas: Uncovering Lost Piano Works by Latin American Women Composers” by Costa Rican pianist, Dr. Gabriela Calderon Cornejo, is an enlightening piano performance with commentary on the album and anthology Musas which strives to uncover and celebrate a collection of powerful at-risk compositions written by Latin American women born before 1950. Dr. Calderón Cornejo is currently premiering Musas on a worldwide tour with the hope of providing these women with a long overdue voice.

Many of the pieces of pre-internet Latin American women composers are slowly disappearing. This is because very few women of this time were able to overcome the regional societal norms and actively compose music. This is not surprising since, historically, women have had to face obstacles and deal with culturally imposed limitations due to their gender. Latin America was not unfamiliar to these practices. Unfortunately, these composers’ contributions are slowly disappearing due to the lack of exposure and limited cultural preservation programs in many countries. This recital focuses on rescued pieces by Dr. Gabriela Calderón Cornejo in her recent album Musas. Musas aims to highlight selected pieces from pre-internet Latin American women composers to ensure that they continue to enrich and delight generations to come. Through this recital, attendees will have access to a live performance with commentary on compositions from Musas consisting of works by Carmen Barradas (Uruguay), María de Baratta (El Salvador), Maruja Hinestrosa (Colombia), Nelly Mele Lara (Venezuela), and Aurora Román Casares (Ecuador).
