About the Event
First up is Howard Munson who will be showing a recent 30 minute compilation of new film work. Howard Munson is a legendary North Beach filmmaker. He has posters exhibited at the Caffe Greco at 423 Columbus Avenue in San Francisco and he has made posters for many North Beach group art shows. Howard has a BFA and MFA from the SF Art Institute (1977). Munson has served as professor at the SF Art Academy and the SF Art Institute. Howard also has experience in printmaking and bookmaking, including original Japanese style books and he has followers who have purchased his books over the years. Some of these books will be on hand for display!
Munson has produced short videos about North Beach and San Francisco, including street interviews with people. He always has a camera in hand and seeks the surrealist layer of life and art. Howard has much love for preserving cultural artifacts and is a longtime, inspirational creator in North Beach.
Next up is Fanny Renoir who will be presenting her Fanny's All Stars film (2010).
It is based on the spirit of spontaneity with gathering people together under Fanny's direction.
The goal is to bring people together and exhibit their talents, including six singers and a lot of leaping around! This rare video also shows impressions of people who are living history, including Fanny's artistic colleagues and fellow creators in North Beach.
The film features improvisational techniques with numerous stars in the neighborhood, including two dogs: Blanca and Max; watch out for their wagging tails! The human cast consists of: Mary Lucas, Rosemary Manno, Ronald Sauer, Carrington, Dorol Conrad as Elvis, Marcia McGovern, Stephanie, Marsha Bellavance, Greg, Nancy Calef, and Jody Weiner. Fanny's All Stars was filmed by Judy On.
Fanny Renoir is a renaissance artist. She has written 10 books of prose and poetry, and she has also penned a history of North Beach, essays on politics, and a novel called The Red and Yellow Knight (1984). Over the years, Renoir has photographed many North Beach colony artists. Additionally, Fanny has produced 62 group art and variety shows, featuring local Bay Area talent. Fanny is very politically active and devotes a great deal of time to the study of history and the world. Like many Americans, Fanny wants the USA to survive as a democracy.
A post-discussion with Howard Munson & Fanny Renoir will be moderated by Jeff M. Giordano.
